Vegetable-dyed Mother of Pearl was a common material used in the late 1800âs, because of its relative approachable cost and its receptiveness to dyes. I have never seen them done in this taupe color before, however. The center button depicting a town skyline on a river or canal is very special. Also, please notice the sunrise button, the very delicate chrysanthemum etch work, and the green glass center detail (which I suspect may be of a slightly younger art deco vintage).
