Carved Vegetable-Dyed Mother of Pearl and Cut Steel Buttons, ca. 1870. The etching on these jewel-toned buttons forms lovely framing. It is interesting to see how the button maker worked creatively with the imperfections in the mother of pearl. Note the 3rd button from the clasp (blue-purple). Do you see the plaid design underneath the steel quadrafoil? Another favorite is the button next to that one, with the tiny circle chase carving.
