While snorkeling in the Yucatan the artist saw a large shell move unexpectedly. Out of curiosity he hovered over it and after a time a tentacle pushed the shell up and an octopus eye peered out of a hole the size of a golf ball. He wasn't able to hover around long enough to see it come out but have seen footage of octopus squeezing through small openings like that. This piece is inspired by that sighting as well as the artist's wife suggesting he does more work that has a northwest and ocean theme now that they live in Washington state. The octopus reminds us to blend in and stay flexible when we need to.
